901 Area Code: Memphis's Number on the Mississippi

901 has served Memphis since 1947, tying the city's deep musical heritage and its status as a global logistics powerhouse under one long-standing area code.

History & Coverage

901 originally covered a large region of West Tennessee. As the state's population grew, other codes split off for surrounding areas, but Memphis itself has never needed an overlay, keeping 901 as its sole prefix.

Why Businesses Choose 901

• Global logistics hub credibility: as home to FedEx's global headquarters and hub, 901 carries enormous logistics and freight industry recognition
• Music heritage and tourism: Memphis's role as the birthplace of the blues and rock 'n' roll (Sun Studio, Beale Street) gives 901 strong cultural tourism appeal
• Healthcare and biotech growth: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and a growing medical district add further business credibility

Key Industries & Neighborhoods

Downtown Memphis and Beale Street anchor music tourism and hospitality, while the area around Memphis International Airport hosts FedEx's massive global logistics operations.
