773 Area Code: Chicago's Neighborhood Number

773 launched in 1996 when Chicago's original 312 area code split, giving the city's residential neighborhoods outside downtown their own dedicated prefix for the first time.

History & Coverage

773 covers all of Chicago outside the downtown core reserved for 312, including neighborhoods like Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Hyde Park. The 872 overlay was added in 2009 to serve the same footprint.

Why Businesses Choose 773

• Neighborhood authenticity: 773 is closely tied to Chicago's distinct, diverse neighborhoods rather than the corporate downtown core represented by 312
• Small business and restaurant density: Chicago's beloved neighborhood restaurant and retail scene overwhelmingly operates under 773 numbers
• Cultural and music identity: Chicago's blues, house music, and indie arts scenes are deeply rooted in neighborhoods using 773

Key Industries & Neighborhoods

Wicker Park and Logan Square anchor a dense concentration of independent restaurants, music venues, and creative businesses, while Hyde Park adds academic institutions including the University of Chicago.

Fun Facts

• 773 covers more of Chicago's land area and population than the more prestigious downtown-focused 312 code
• Chicago's house music genre, born in the city's neighborhoods, has deep roots in areas now served by 773

Conclusion

For neighborhood restaurants, creative businesses, and community-rooted brands, 773 remains the number that best captures Chicago's authentic, diverse identity outside downtown.
