619 Area Code: San Diego's Number by the Bay

619 was created in 1982 when Southern California's original 714 area code was split, giving San Diego its own distinct identity. Today it remains the number most closely tied to the city's downtown, bay, and beach communities.

History & Coverage

619 covered all of San Diego County when it launched in 1982. As the region grew, 858 (North County/La Jolla) and 760 (further north) split off, leaving 619 concentrated on the city of San Diego itself and the South Bay.

Why Businesses Choose 619

• Military and defense credibility: San Diego hosts one of the largest concentrations of US Navy and defense contractor operations in the country, closely tied to 619
• Tourism and hospitality strength: with world-famous beaches, the San Diego Zoo, and Comic-Con, 619 is deeply linked to the city's visitor economy
• Biotech cluster proximity: while La Jolla's biotech corridor mostly uses 858, downtown San Diego's growing biotech offices increasingly favor 619 for its central identity

Key Industries & Neighborhoods

Downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter anchor tourism and hospitality, while the naval base and Barrio Logan add a strong defense and logistics presence.

Conclusion

For tourism, defense, and hospitality businesses in Southern California, 619 remains the most authentic number for representing San Diego's urban and coastal identity.
