954 Area Code: Fort Lauderdale's Number on the Water

954 was carved out of the original 305 area code in 1995 to serve Broward County's rapidly growing population, and has since become the definitive number for Fort Lauderdale's waterfront business economy.

History & Coverage

954 launched in 1995, splitting off from 305 as South Florida's population boomed. It covers Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and the rest of Broward County, with the 754 overlay added in 2004 for additional capacity.

Why Businesses Choose 954

• Yachting and marine industry hub: Fort Lauderdale is known as the "Yachting Capital of the World," and 954 is the standard number for marinas, brokers, and marine services
• International trade gateway: Port Everglades, one of the busiest cruise and cargo ports in the US, drives strong logistics and import/export business under 954
• Tourism and hospitality growth: Broward County's beaches and resort corridor rely on 954 for both B2C and B2B hospitality operations

Key Industries & Neighborhoods

Las Olas Boulevard and the Fort Lauderdale marina district anchor tourism, yachting, and hospitality, while Port Everglades and the airport corridor add logistics and international trade companies.

Fun Facts

• Fort Lauderdale has more registered yachts and boats per capita than almost anywhere else in the world, giving 954 an unusually strong maritime business identity
• Port Everglades, within the 954 footprint, is one of the top three busiest cruise ports on Earth

Conclusion

For marine, tourism, and logistics businesses along South Florida's coast, 954 remains the area code most tied to Fort Lauderdale's identity as a global waterfront destination.
