404 Area Code: Atlanta's Original Number of the South

404 is one of the original 1947 area codes and was Atlanta's only prefix for nearly 50 years, making it the code most steeped in the city's civil-rights history, corporate rise, and cultural legacy.

History & Coverage

404 covered the entire Atlanta metro until 678 launched as an overlay in 1998, followed by 470 in 2018. Despite now sharing its footprint with two newer codes, 404 remains the original and most storied of the three.

Why Businesses Choose 404

• Corporate headquarters heritage: Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, and Home Depot all built their reputations under 404 numbers
• Civil rights and cultural history: Atlanta's role as the home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement gives 404 deep symbolic weight
• Scarcity premium: because 404 has been in continuous use the longest, well-formed numbers are harder to find than 678 or 470

Key Industries & Neighborhoods

Downtown and Midtown Atlanta anchor Fortune 500 headquarters and the city's fast-growing biotech and fintech scene, while the film and TV production industry spans studios across the wider metro.

Fun Facts

• 404 was one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947 and remained Atlanta's only code for over 50 years
• Atlanta is now the third metro in the US to use three area codes for one region, alongside New York and Los Angeles

Conclusion

For businesses wanting the deepest possible tie to Atlanta's corporate and cultural legacy, 404 remains the city's original and most historically significant prefix.
